Ranjith has produced and directed the 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint', which is his funniest and most pleasurable film of late released in malayalam. Very few films are complex and comic at the same time, but Pranchiyettan achieves this almost impossible feat by employing clever plot devices, a fresh narrative structure .peppy dialogues and timely comedies is what drives the movie forward. After the Trivandrum slang which worked magic for him mamooty comes with the trissur slang and the result is the same. Mammootty has done the role of a simple man, having a golden heart, with honesty and conviction that makes it an enjoyable film. It is a story build around several small incidents that make a rich man's miserable life. Pranchiyettan (Mammootty) as he is affectionately referred to by his friends and people, he is a successful business man but is really worried about the name he is having in the society. The accented tone and the dialogues, which are top notch, are perhaps the best thing about the film as well. Pranchiyettan or Cherammel Eenasu Francis (Mammootty) is a wealthy rice trader based in Thrissur. He has a great complex about not being enough educated and believes that it is the reason why he is not getting acceptance in the society like many others. Pranchi and his cronies try really hard to “buy” some recognition and respect, like the ‘Padmashri’ honour for instance.
Pranchiyettan is one of the most solid characters to have emerged from Ranjith's after balamani , neelakandan and jagannadan. Through pranchi renjith has succeeded in portraying the problems of society and the troubles in a business man’s life when he craves for a name in the society.
St. Francis role as an avatar in the film is what transforms the entire film into a fantastic joyride. There hasn’t been ever a fun filled interaction between man and god as described in this film.the three central characters in the film interact with one another. Pranchi, Jose (Siddiq) and Omana (Khushboo) go a long way back, having been classmates at school. Pranchi and Omana even had a thing going in high school, until Jose played spoiler and broke them up. Years later, the trio live in the same city, move about in the same social circles and even get to interact with one another. Omana and Jose have got married and Pranchi still nurtures that soft corner he has always had for his first love. But the best thing about it is that the bitterness has over the years dissolved into thin air, and the three have comfortably managed to live along with one another, and there was no fight scenes which showed their childhood bitterness. The movie carries a remarkable scene, troublemaker Supru (Tini Tom) rings up Jose to let him know that Omana is on a visit to Pranchi's place. Pat comes the reply from Jose that he has known it all along and has no issues about it. Supru's rejoinder after banging the phone down in disgust about men who have started believing their wives drawn standing ovation.
The briefest of roles sometimes have the most to say. Padmasree (Priyamani), the interior decorator who comes to paint his house, plays a cameo role, but she was successful in taking pranchi’s heart however small her presence had been on the screen, pranchi was determined to propose her, as it was her who sowed the seeds of love in him, for a long time he had wondered why he did not feel for any women, as and when he was about to propose her she says how a man had betrayed her and she loved pranchi for not proposing her irrespective of the fact they spent many time together .
Almost nothing escapes from renjith’s pen be it politics, religion, society or basic human nature, he has describe the present day life of people with ease. Which is why, you might love Pranchiyettan and the Saint like I did, or you might hate it, but there is no way in which you can ignore it. He has touched some topic which we thought were difficult to tell.
Mammootty as Pranchiyettan realizes that the Thrissur dialect (which he delivers to perfection) is not the only thing that would make this character a real challenge for the artist in him. The actor plays Pranchiyettan as if he were born to do it, and the personal details that he adds to his marvelous performance makes it one of the most profound ones in his illustrious career. The supporting cast never disappoints either, Khushboo , Priyamani, the playful Siddiq, or the trouble maker Tini Tom, the amusing Innocent or the expressive Ganapathi, and the intelligent teacher jagathy.
Ranjith manages a unique mix of present day problems and comedy in 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' .the greatest trouble renjith faced in this film will be how to blend he god and man into one, since it was practically impossible fo us to believe that francis could speak Malayalam, he doesn’t starts of with malayalam , the way in which francis switch over to Malayalam is brilliant and convincing. the problem is that most of them look a bit too trivial and that is true even when he deals with two important issues in the story, the one involving his feelings for the girl named Padmashri and the other, with a boy named Pauly. However what takes the film ahead is its packaging, which looks fresh, even when the story moves ahead mostly without a definite focus. Ranjith has done a decent job, considering the excellent dialogues that almost cover up the flaws in the script. the voice, which has been used for the Saint, has a captivating charm and has done wonders for the film. Venu’s camera and Ouseppachan’s music are among the highlights of the film. The story at some point of time was like a collection of so many social issues, but his dialogues and editing made it simple and watchabele.
